Christmas Cards

Ever since Sir Henry Cole commissioned John Calcott Horsley in 1843 to create some Christmas cards because he was too busy to write to his friends like he usually did during this holiday, they have been a popular way for people to send Yule greetings to friends and family. No one truly expected these cards, printed first in black and white, and later colored by hand, to become a tradition. However, once the printer sold off the leftover cards from the original 1,000 cards printed for “Old King Cole,” people loved them.

Following the popularity of this new way of acknowledging Christmas and sending greetings to loved ones, creating Christmas cards became a big business. It also offered new opportunities for artists to create beautiful works of Yule themed art to be reproduced on cards that would be shared with many people. These artists would be paid and their art would be seen.

Over the years, the types of greetings have changed. The choices include serious, religious, funny, along with specialty cards for husbands, wives, grandparents, lovers and just about any other type you can think of. For a very long time, choosing Yule cards was one of the favorite activities in preparation for the holidays. Gift cards also became quite popular because they provided a simple way to give the gift of money to loved ones who lived far away, or were just hard to shop for.

There have even been crafts and decorating ideas formed around Christmas cards. Many mothers, grandmothers and daughters used these cards following the season’s end to string together and make decorative wastebaskets. During the season, each eagerly anticipated card was immediately taped or tacked to frame a doorway, or define a mantel. The cards were also saved to use on next year’s gifts as name tags.

As with many other things, the introduction to personal computers and printers changed things regarding Christmas cards. Now everyone who owns, or has access to, a computer and a printer can design their own cards. There are even programs to buy to do it for you. With this software, all you really need is the proper cardstock, a printer and color ink. With a little time and effort, these cards can be quite beautiful and meaningful creations that come straight from the heart.

Another way that computers have changed the system of sending Yule cards is through the advent of ecards, or egreetings. Some very nice free ones can be found all over the internet. You can also find some pay websites with extra special egreetings. All of these sites allow you to add your own personal message as well as music. The really nice thing is that you save on postage and can send as many of these as you want or need to for free.

No matter what type you choose for your Christmas cards, they will never go out of style. This will always remain the time honored tradition that was started so many years ago. People will always love sending them, and receiving them.

Cheap Christmas Gift Ideas

Are you having trouble thinking of good, or at least decent, cheap Christmas gift ideas? Following you will find some suggestions that you might be useful to you:

* Flowers can be appreciated depending on who you're giving them to. You might think these can get a little expensive, but they're always affordable when you pull them out of the ground. Feel free to pick something red, green, and white so it feels a little less like it's a different holiday. This is probably the cheapest of these cheap Christmas gift ideas.
* Most people love candy. It's quite rare to find someone who gets mad at you for getting them candy. People always sell Christmas themed candies for that time of the year. If the person you're trying to shop for doesn't like candy for some strange reason, then you can always try other sweet (or not so sweet for diabetics and dieters) foods. These would include cake, cookies, cupcakes, muffins, or anything made into the shape of a present to apologize for lack of a better one. You might consider this if he or she is a bit picky.
* Balloons can also be a nice gesture. If you can't find a themed one, try painting a small little snowman on one, or whatever design you think looks nice. Some people might prefer a Rudolph, if you have the talent.
* For people not used to having a lot of money, maybe you could just give them that. This can be done either in cash, check or gift certificate.
* There are a few interesting cheap Christmas gift ideas for children of a very young age, or just imaginative adults. You could personalize a fairy tale centered around the child or adult. You could write it yourself, and find some pictures of the person to paste in it. Photoshop can also be used if you prefer.
* The best thing you can get for someone, though, is always something suited to their particular tastes. If you can't come up with a specific CD, book, movie, or game, then try getting them a general item if you know they like it. For example, a horror movie fan may be bought a horror movie. Just ask someone first if they already have what you want to get them. It could be a little awkward to get them a CD they already own.

Some people may hope not to resort to cheap Christmas gift ideas, but for those who do, at least the people you shop for will know you tried.

Handmade Christmas Gifts

Presents are a big part of the Christmas morning excitement. Many argue that they are not the most important part of the holiday season. No matter what you feel on that subject, it is the thought behind the gift that counts the most. Handmade Christmas gifts provide a chance to say what’s in your heart with each creative step.

When deciding on what to make, think of things that the person you’re giving to may use a lot of. For example, avid readers use plenty of bookmarks to mark their place in the books they read. Gardeners love to display their flowers and they can never have too many pots for planting. What about pillows? If your gift receiver loves to recline on the couch or in bed, they would love plenty of pillows.

All of these things make it easier to create a homemade gift for someone. Bookmarks for readers can be made out of felt or cardboard. Different decorations can be soldered to oversized paperclips to create metal bookmarks too. Ribbon, with a charm added also make great place markers for book.

Homemade pillows are easier than ever to create and inexpensive too. Craft and sewing stores carry pillow forms that only need to be covered with fabric and sewn together. You can embroider the cover or attach tassels if you want. Pillows can be as big or as small as you wish.

If you crochet, your presents could be blankets, bed spreads, sweaters, scarves, or hats. Depending on how creative you wish to get, you can create several very nice things to give away as gifts. Don’t let those special God-given talents go to waste during the holiday season. What you spend in time you make up for in money saved on gifts.

Handmade gifts work for the family pet as well. Make your own plush chew toy or noisemaker for the cat or dog. Pet lovers would appreciate a framed portrait of their favorite canine or feline. You could even have a portrait of the owner and their prized pooch screen-printed on a T-shirt or a sweater.

When it comes to homemade gifts you are only limited by your imagination. Stores sell kits to make bracelets, barrettes, hair bows, and other accessories that girls like. Beads in every color, shape, and size are available for costume jewelry making. Find out the person’s favorite stone or their birthstone and create a complete set of jewelry using that stone.

The mom or dad who has everything may lose their keys on a regular basis. Build a key rack and personalize it with their names. Add a slot for mail or a shelf for a small knick-knack.

Handmade Christmas gifts require a bit of thought which is what makes them so great. Amaze the people on your list this year with something they weren’t expecting, something that comes with a little thought, a bit of work, and tons of love and it’s sure to be a hit!

Christmas Decorations Ideas

Christmas Decorations You Can Make With Your Kids

The Christmas holidays are a wonderful time of the year, especially since the kids are home from school. Make the most of this time by making memories that will last. Creating Christmas decorations with your kids is a fun time for all. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Tree Skirt - Find some felt material and design a tree skirt. Add beads, bows, sparkles and any kind of trim available to make this a one-of-a-kind skirt. Perhaps the kids would like to add pictures of Santa along the rim of the skirt. Another tree skirt idea would be to make a quilted pattern, using different plaids and solid colors. Decorate it with a fancy trim. It could not only be used for the tree, but as the base centerpiece for a vase of poinsettias.

Centerpiece - Another idea is to have your children gather together Christmas balls in various sizes and colors. Find a large clear vase or bowl and arrange them inside. You may want to add some holly as well. This colorful display would make a lovely centerpiece for your table.

Christmas Card Holder - Here is a creative idea for storing your Holiday cards. Start with an empty Kleenex (or tissue) box, and cut out the top rectangular part of it. Wrap it in Christmas paper, and use it as a Christmas card holder. Decorate it with holly and ivy. Then, attach a ribbon to both ends and you have a beautiful homemade Christmas card basket.

Paper Chain - An old standby is to take several different colors of construction paper and cut them in strips. Then attach two ends of the strips together (with a stapler, glue or tape) to form a circle. Continue by looping another cut strip inside that one. When it’s long enough, wrap the chain around your Christmas tree.

Candy Chain - While stringing popcorn or beads around a tree is a tried and true tradition, how about using Lifesavers candy? Your kids can choose the color order or even try to make patterns. Use different color twine or ribbons to give it a Candyland touch. Add candy canes as well. Since both candies come in their own wrapping, just use a needle through the Lifesavers wrapping. After the tree is taken down, they can be fun snacks to eat.

Christmas decorations are a great way of expressing the holiday spirit in your home. The kids will love creating them, and be proud to have their art displayed. And, instead of looking like a department store, your home will become a reflection of the family that lives in it.
